The Gift of Tongues + Prophetic Words in a Corporate Setting - Raun and Shawn Lohry from YASHA.
Definitions:
- Tongues is often called Glossolalia
- One expressing the gift is the gollasolist
- Scripture is clear about a second work or infilling of the Holy Spirit
-Baptism of the Holy Spirit
-Infilling of the Holy Spirit is being filled with the Holy Spirit at the time of conversion
- Some say that the Spirit's baptism occurs once for each believer at the moment of salvation but the Spirit's filling may occur not only at salvation but also on a number of occasions after salvation
The Initial Physical Evidence:
- Tongues are often first associated with the work of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost: Acts 2:4. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
- Others believe that it is merely sufficient evidence of the Spirit's baptism and not necessary to prove a second in filling of the Holy Spirit.
-Valid arguments can be made for both positions.
Scriptural Evidence:
Acts 2:4 - All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.
Acts 9:17 - Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 10:44-48 -
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[a] and praising God.
Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
Acts 8:14-17 - When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Acts 11:15-18 -
“As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with[a] water, but you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit.’ 17 So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”
18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.”
Nine Spiritual Gifts:
1 Corinthians 12:18 - 31 -
And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[a]? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.

Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues
1 Corinthians 14: 1, 39 - Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. (39) Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
Ecstatic Utterance?
- Tongues are not an ecstatice utterance where the speaker is in a trance. It is praise to God with groanings too deep for words. Words are led by the spirit to address God.
- 1 Corinthians 14:2 NIV - For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.
- 1 Corinthians 14:2 NRSV - for those who speak in a tongue do not speak to other people but to God; for nobody understands them, since they are speaking mysteries in the Spirit.
Medical Research
- Tongues are spiritual intercession, most often in an unknown language. A medical researcher compared brain activity when a subject was singing in his native language and singing in golossolalia. Brain activity differed when singing ina known versus unknown language giving credence to 1 Corinthians 14:14: For if praying in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.
- Paul implies that the speaker is fully conscious in thought and willful determination and the study bore that truth.
-Finally, the study pointed out that the amygdala was more active. The amygdala is associated with emotion. he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself..." (1 Corinthians 14:4).
Orderly Worship
- 1 Corinthians 14:26-33 -
What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.
29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.
The Case of the Intractable Speaker
- A gollasolist was very loud and was speaking at inappropriate times. He was approached by church leadership for correction and instruction but refused to change because he contended that he didn't have control over what "the Spirit was saying". Leadership felt that this was not inline with their understanding of scripture. The speaker ended up going to another fellowship.
- An interpreter makes the public expression of tongues more natural. Where there is no interpreter present, the speaker may interpret in any interpretation, the divine mixes with the humanity. The task is to sort through the dirt and the divine.
